When

Choose your favourite cycling holiday period and enjoy Slovenia Gravel with us! We don't have any fixed departures, get in touch with us, let us know when you would like to cycle and we will make it happen! Slovenia offer one of the longest cycling season ever due to the big variety of its climate zones. The coast Meditterranean area and the arid Karst offers perfect temperatures from early Spring to late Fall. The Vipava valley and the territory East of the capital Ljubljana, up to the city of Maribor are enjoyble from April to October. The Giulian Alps and the Caravance Alps up North await you with your gravel bike for the long Summer days. Late Spring is the month of the unbelievable daffodil's bloom on the Caravance' mountain slopes, early Summer is a delight for the eyes of anyone in love with Alpine flowers: leave your gravel bike by the Soka River and climb up to the meadows on the Triglav National Park and enjoy the show! The beautiful beech and oaks forests that covers hundred of miles of the Slovenia countryside offer a dreamlike scenario when cycling across it during Autumn: imagine a winding white gravel roads crossing all the tones of jellow, orange and red on the crispy end of the season air.

Weather

To plan a gravel bike trip in Slovenia means to consider that you will be pedaling across a wide range of climate zones. On the same tour you can cycle on the 40° of the Meditterranean coast - chasing for shadow while the cicadas are celebrating around you - till to meet the chill and feezy mountain air of the Julian Alps. When gravel cycling on the mountains of Slovenia, be ready with proper outdoor gear: a good wind and rain proof jacket, a lightweight down jacket, a sweater, a whool beanie, mid season gloves, leg and arm warmers and comfortable trousers will help you to enjoy the surroundings.  From May to the whole month of July, short but violent thunderstorms are frequent in the second part of the day. The area where rain can be torrential (be safe out there!) its the Brda/Collio and the nearby Friuli Venezia Giulia plane. Summer nights in the Slovenian mountains are cool (10-15 degrees) and the days are hot and characterized by stable weather (25-30 degrees). Do not forget a swimsuit and flip-flops neither!

Water

Despite the big number of rivers and streams that runs across the countryside of Slovenia, to find public fountains at the town's square or on the side of the road it's not that obvious, even on the mountain area of the Giulian Alps and on the Caravance. Please bring two 500cc waterbottles to be carried on your gravel bike and use an hydration vest. You need to be able to carry along the biggest quantity of water, these are no joke! Temperatures can be really high and you can't rely to re-supply only on bars, restaurants and supermarkets. Please note while cycling many sectors of our gravel tours across the wild of Slovenia you will not cross with towns. read carefully our very helpful roadbook - where you will know exactly where and when you will find water (&beers) and food - and plan yor day ahead!

Food

Slovenian kitchen celebrates local ingredients, cultural pride and incredible flavours. We love the wide offer of great restaurants in Ljubljana, to explore local food markets, to stop at our favourite farms along our gravel bike tours and buy cheese directly from shepperds, taste scented olive oil before to put our legs under a table and have memorable dinners together with some of the best wines in the world. When cycling our gravel bike tours, you will clearly catch us as Italians! We love great food and Slovenia is the place that does not make feel us sad to be abroad: on the roadbook you will find all the unmissible food stops along the way. Be ready to tackle long stretches of gravel with no-resupply possibilities, so carry with you something healty and gnammy bought at the local market.

Safety

Bring with you proper outdoor gear. When in the mountains, you'll often cycle well above 2000mt and a summer storm can turn into hailstorm or snow. When in the Meditterranean coast, the sun will burn you and temperatures will be very (very) high. Use sunglasses and suncream, drink a lot. There will be no shortage of beers.
Ride safe. Remember that while gravel cycling in Slovenia, mobile phone coverage can be very poor and not available for many miles.
Read carefully your roadbook, plan your day, bring food and water with you. The use of a GPS device for navigation is mandatory.
Respect the environment, respect pedestrian and cattle along the trails.

Lodging

We mainly work with mountain huts, farms but also inns and small family-run hotels. We offer to you accomodation facilities with the best quality-price ratio where you can enjoy authentic experiences in a surprising environmental context. We take care of the accomodation booking and if wanted, we deliver your bags daily: you just have to enjoy your gravel cycling tour and have the best Slovenian'dreams ever!

Getting there

To explore Slovenia by bike you have two main cities to use as a starting point: Trieste in Italy (few kmtrs from Slovenia's border) and Ljubljana (the capital of Slovenia). Logistically both works great. Many of our gravel bike tours starts both from Trieste and from Ljubljana. If flying into Venice, you have direct trains to Trieste. If ending your gravel bike tour in Piran, you can enjoy a beautiful hydrofoil trip and get back to Venice in 3hrs: a real highlight!

Ljubljana' airport is well connected with all European' capitals; Direct connections with New York, Miami, San Francisco, Dallas and Chicago on the States, with Toronto in Canada.

If going for a Dolomiti-Slovenia gravel bike tour (Slavc or Meja) the starting point is in the town of Dobbiaco (South Tyrol): you can get there by train both from Italy (Venice/Milan airports) and from Germany (Munich airport).
